Cross-curricular coffee table

Grade 12 student C.B. designed this amazing table – he welded the base in our Jewelry/Metalwork class, and C.F. and W.G. in Senior Woodwork helped him out with the gorgeous cherry tabletop. Excellent work!

Grade 12 student J.B. wanted to try his hand at blacksmithing/forging! Sadly, the Highland shop no longer has a forge, but we made do with a torch. Awesome self-directed project – check out that detail!

Self-Directed Pierced projects

Gorgeous work by N.M. in Grade 12, including Christmas ornaments and some upcycled spoon jewellers saw window hangings. Wow!

Riveted pendant

Beautiful work by C.B. in Grade 12 – nickel silver and copper riveted together with copper wire, then domed and polished.

Hand-carved Lost Wax casting!

Inspired by some of Gray Metal’s work out of Vancouver, C.R. in Grade 12 carved and cast this gorgeous ring out of sterling silver – love the geometric style!

Welding at Highland

This year, we took over the welding bay, with plans to increase opportunities for Jewelry/Metalwork students to try out welding here at Highland. There are many great opportunities in our area for students who decide this might be a career option, including the Metal Mechanical Trades Sampler program at Isfeld (more information here), and the Trades Training apprenticeship/scholarship program at North Island College Campbell River (more information here). Pieces below completed by CB and JB in Grade 12.

Guest Jeweller project

In Spring 2018, we had a professional jeweller and college instructor, Cheryl Jacobs, come into our class to talk about local advanced education and entrepreneurship in jewelry-making (See the “Other Awesome Resources” section on this website to view her work). Cheryl shared new skills with us, and worked with students in both Junior and Senior Jewelry. Pictured here are a variety of cuffs designed by students – these projects incorporated leather work, riveting, and texturing and tempering metal.
